2008

The Club enjoys supporting all the events hosted by the West Midland Clubs and is looking to move further a field when higher levels of competition are required.

The Club actively encourages the training squads to produce crews that are good enough to qualify for Henley Royal and Henley Ladies and this will remain a key goal.

If there are other events that you wish to attend please let the Captain Ian Howell know - ASAP - Priority will be given to squad crews however we will try and support all levels of rowing where equipment and trailers are available.

For 2 day regattas the junior events are more likely to be on the sprint day:

Record 6 Ross Crews Compete at National Championships

For the second year running Ross RC attend the National championships in Nottingham. Robin Fletcher, junior coach took a selection of promising athletes to compete against the best rowers in the country, over a 2000 metre course. The conditions were better than last year, but very strong winds were making sculling hard for lightweight rowers. Ed Surman 14, rowing a single scull got through to the final and achieved a 4th position. Ellie Blackwood 14, also in a single scull put in a very fine effort against very strong winds, but was unable to make it into the finals.

As the day went on the light showers disappeared and the blue skies returned, but the wind was as strong as ever. Rosie Lindley and Kelly Morris made there way to the start of the start of the finals WJ14 double sculls, followed by Louise and Katie Hudd who were racing in the following event the finals of the WJ15 double sculls. The conditions by now were quite bad at the start. Strong cross winds made it hard for boats to get into position and to maintain that position ready for the start. Rosie and Kelly made a good start in their race and fought hard all the way down the 2000 metre course, achieving a 5th position. Then it was the turn of Louise and Katie Hudd again they made a flying start and fought hard all the way down the course to achieve a 4th position, “Katie said at times the wind was so strong it felt as if we were not moving forward at all. This was a day for the heavier rowers, but we really enjoyed our race and the position we came, we couldn’t have gone any faster”. The last boat to race on Saturday for Ross was the WJ16 quad who were trying to qualify for the finals, despite the good start and holding 2nd position for most of the way they were pipped on the line and finished 3rd in their race, knocking them out of the final. Chris Jones 14 competed in singles sculls but was knocked out in the time qualification time trail and Borris Darcy & Joe Bunting missed out in the first round of J18 double sculls against strong field.

Club junior coach Robin Fletcher said “he was pleased with the crews that had been chosen to represent the club at the Nat champs. Last year we only took two crews along, but this year we took six crews with three making it into the finals. I would like to think that next year Ross RC would pick up some medals at the Nat champs”.

Captain Ian Howell and club president Clive Snell came along to watch the racing both said “they felt very proud to watch Ross RC taking part and competing against some the best athletes in the country. Although we didn’t medal this time we have all learnt a lot and we will be back next year and hopefully come away with some medals”.

Rowing Club to host Olympic Flag Raising ceremony

Working with Steve Ashton (Olympic Co-ordinator) from Herefordshire council the Rowing club has been selected as one of the sites where the handover from the Beijing Olympiad to the London Olympiad on Sunday August 24th is being celebrated.

Plans are still to be finalised however it is intended to integrate the event into the Junior veteran Regatta being hosted by the Ross Club. This event attracts thousands of competitors and is one element of the three day festival of rowing. Local sporting heroes will be invited along with current sporting stars to mix with what is hoping to be a selection of former Olympic stars. The event will be held in the Presidents enclosure where the Olympic 2012 flag will fly before being transferred to the top of the club house.

Club President Clive Snell commented “This is a huge recognition for the town and the rowing club to be selected to represent Herefordshire in this national Event". "The event itself will combine music provided by local group Forte to fit in with the nationally planned “Sing the nation” spectacular and it promises to be a lively event!”.

Llandaff Regatta

The Ross club took a handsome haul of 5 wins under the beautiful surroundings of LLandaff cathedral in Cardiff on Saturday 12th and 13th. Winner on Saturday was Jasmin Brandram Jones in WJ16 singles. On Sunday the Pots were won by J12 double sculls Gregory Fitz Horswell & Nick Burden, WJ12 double sculls, Olivia Baynham-Williams and Georgie Jones, Wj12 Quads Olivia Baynham Wiliams and Georgie Jones, Ellie Grindle & Amy Surman with Dan Ruck Coxing. In women’s Novice sculls Hannah Jones won with great style and the pick of the is were the Women’s vet Novice four of Karen Blackwood, Dawn, Rowena Pollock, Jackie Baynham coxed by Sheron Dean Lucas. This was the first ever win for Dawn, Jackie and Rowena who have all worked hard with the their cox, Ruth Davies, to preserve and deliver a fine performance.

Vets Perform Well at Henley Vets

Vets Perform Well at Henley Vets The Vet D crew of Jeremy Picton Turberville, Graham Watling, Paul Nichols and David Sykes coxed by Hannah jones lost in the second round of the Veteran “D” category at Henley Veterans Regatta. The is event is run over 1000 meters of the Henley course and attracts the best Veteran rowers from all over the world. The Ross crew has an excellent start leading until the 650 mark only to be over hauled in the last moments of the race by a Strong crew from Lea Rowing Club (London)

Ross Strike Gold at Peterborough J14 Championships

The Junior Academy travelled to Peterborough on sat 28th June to compete in the J14 championships. This attracts the best crews in the age group from all over the country. Competing Ross had several crews and scullers. Junior Captain Robin Fletcher was delighted that the womens j14 quad sculls of, Rosie Lindley, Kelly Morris, Eleanor Blackwood and Katie Hudd coxed by Morgan Baynham Williams won Gold. They were competing against the very same crews who beat them the previous week at Thames Valley Park. This results puts the Ross club at the very top of this age category. Ed Surman competing at J14 single sculls was unlucky not to make his final after posting the 3rd fastest time of the day in his heat as only two progressed to the next round. Rosie Lindley and Kelly Morris both made it through to the womens J14 1x final only to be left behind on the start after a marshalling mix up allowed the race to start without them.

More Success at Ironbridge

Whilst the High Performance Junior Squad was striking gold the rest of the club was at the traditional Ironbridge regatta event held in the picturesque Ironbridge Gorge on the river Severn. This was again a successful event for the Junior Squad with the womens J13 doubles being a particular highlight. The Crews of Abi Beddard & Amy Surman and Zoe Sarjent and Rosie Lindley both worked through quarters and semi finals to meet each other in the final. After a tremendously strong start by Zoe and Rosie it was Abi and Amy who pushed through to win. The quality of sculling on show was tremendous and both crews were commended by commentators on the bank. The Junior Academy added to its totals with wins from Gregory Fitzhorswell and Lewis Jones who beat a plucky Sam Taylor and Sam King in the final of the j12 double sculls. Chris Jones was another big win. He worked through his semi final in the j16 single sculls to beat a strong Hereford opponent in the final. This win also constitutes Chris’s graduation to a senior Sculler, quite an achievement at 16. The cream of the Senior achievements was the victory of the Senior 3 coxed four of, Steve Tuck, Chris Mellor, Rolland Robinson, Robin Fletcher and Fraser Blackwood. They won their final over a strong crew from Oxford with style. This was also the first senior wins for Chris and Steve who both should be congratulated for their incredible progress.

Performance Four Miss out on Henley Qualification

The top boat from the Ross senior squad missed out on Henley qualification by just 10 seconds on Friday at the qualification races held over the 2220 meter course. Although very disappointed not to make the final cut the competition at this level is incredibly fierce. To be this close is an amazing achievement given that 2 of the rowers literally first stepped into a boat this time last year. It is a testament to the development programmes available at the Ross Club and the determination of these oarsman that have created such incredible progress. Steve, Chris, Rolly & Anthony will now set their sights on achieving this long held goal next year.

Junior Academy Beginners Shine at Stratford

The Avon at Stratford was the venue for the racing on Saturday 20th. This was a primary regatta designed for new rowers and the Junior Academy took the opportunity to take its development squad many of which only started rowing this Easter.

It turned out to be a bumper day for the Ross Club amassing five wins, starting with the Wj13 double scull of Ellie Grindle and Abi Beddard who beat a strong Evesham crew. Next were the Beginner scullers who all performed tremendously in what was for many their first ever single sculling event. These included Rob Hewlett, Matt Griffiths, Jess Crossman, Jasmin Jones, Lewis Jones, Kerry Meek, Rowan Lyster. Ross took 3 winners in this event. these were the remarkable Jack Jones in j13, Isabelle Godden in wj11 who had time to look at the swans on the way down the course and still row 10 seconds faster than her opposition, and Gregory Fitz Horswell who steered a near perfect course to win the boys j11 event.

These wins were capped off with a Ross V Ross final in the mixed J11 quad races. This tense affair was made even more interesting with club captains Ian Howell and Sheron Dean Lucas coxing the determined crews. After a tight start it was the crew of Georgie Jones, Gregory Fitz Horswell, Charlotte Westley and Isabelle Godden who took an early lead. The other Ross crew of Olivia Baynham Williams, Jasmin Jones, Lewis Jones and Jess Crossman, came back strongly urged on by Sheron. By 300 meters still there was only 3/4 length in it with both crews driving hard and rowing brilliantly. At the end it was the crew stroked by Georgie Jones that won on this event however the all the kids demonstrated an exceptional performance. Sheron (ladies captain) commented “The determination of these young rowers is incredible I was really amazed at how hard they worked and the quality of their oarsmanship.

Ross Captain Ian Howell after a long days racing also commented that “The whole event was run in a brilliant spirit that epitomised club rowing that was focused on allowing new rowers to gain their first experience of the sport. I am sure many new competitors were inspired to continue their progress no matter how they did or what club they came from”.

Ross Club Competes at Highest Levels

The local Club this weekend ventured with its Junior Squad to the Multi Lane venue of Holme Pierre Point to compete a Loughborough Regatta. This Event on Saturday the 14th June attracted a high level of competition for the Junior squad which was exactly what Junior Captain Robin Fletcher wanted to achieve. Robin commented we want to challenge our top level Juniors and we are delighted that new levels of performance were achieved.

Highlights of the day were Ed Surman winning the J14 single sculling event against a long term rival from XXXX. Ed Won is final by on 2/100 of a second. The next highlight was the Women j13 coxed quad, made up of Amy Surman, Ellie Grindle, Rosie Brandom Jones and Zoe Sarjant coxed by Morgan Baynham Williams. This crew took control of its final from the start and rowed with grit and accuracy to win by a large margin over its rivals from Runcorn, and Warrington.

All the Ross Juniors competing at Loughborough illustrated the quality of technique and control taught in the Junior Academy. Of special mention were the performance of Rowan Lyster and Megan Godden competing in j15 double sculls and J15 quad coxed quads. Although they were unsuccessful in both events they took their opportunity to experience this level of competition and impressed in this multilane event. Morgan Baynham Williams and Lousie Hudd illustrated core Junior Academy values by supporting the progress of these high potential rowers by joining them in the quad.

National Veterans Regatta

The Men’s and Veteran Squads also pitted themselves against national level competition. The positive aspect of this humbling event was that the Ross Club put its largest ever entry into this high quality event. All crews achieved the standards set out in training and delivered creditable performances. That said the competition level was by far in excess of the current standard achieved by the Ross Club and illustrates the work that still needs to be completed to put Ross on a National footing at veteran level. This event has however provided a real focus and intensity to the squad training sessions and acts as very useful catalyst to bring on the performance ability of the squad members. This training will be put to good use at the local events on the west Midlands circuit.

First National Schools Medal

The National Schools regatta took place over the weekend starting on Friday 23rd May. This event is the pinnacle of junior rowing in the UK where all the best Juniors from Schools and Clubs alike compete for National honours. The vent takes place at the National water sports centre at Holme Pierre Point in a multi lane format. The venue is notorious for bad conditions, however on this day the water was flat and weather was kind.

Ross Was represented by Ed Surman rowing a year above his age in J15 Single scull and Kelly Morris and Rosie Lindley competing in Women’s J14 double sculls.

In the qualification rounds the Ross Double performed well posting the 2nd fastest time to get a good lane draw for their semi final. Ed narrowly lost out not qualifying for his final but picked up valuable experience. In the semi final the Ross double was up against a strong adversary from the city of Oxford club and maintained excellent boat speed to win a place in the final. The girls were delighted with this performance, having an excellent start and controlling their position in the race to ensure they went forward to the next round. Having competed at full tilt for two rounds the crew was certainly fatigued however they were determined to put all the hard work in training to deliver the perfect race.

The final was an incredible battle, the opposition all had flying starts and at the 500 meter point the Ross crew was in fifth place. With the relative boat speeds all similar the spectators were convinced that this was not to be Ross’s day. Kelly & Rosie had other ideas. By 750 meters they had pushed through to forth place however they were over one and ¼ lengths behind the crew from Lea Rowing club (London) and with very little of the race left to catch up. The young Ross stars found some incredible boat speed in the last 150 meters and made up the lost ground and crossed the line almost exactly the same time. The Ross Spectators held their breadth not knowing which way the verdict had gone. Huge cheers erupted when the Ross crew were asked to turn around and approach the medal pontoon. By an incredible feat of bravery Kelly and Rosie had pulled off an amazing result winning a Bronze medal by just .04 of a second. Junior Captain Robin Fletcher commented “This was the most amazing race I have ever witnessed, the girls pulled that from performance from themselves and that epitomises what champions are made from we are very very proud of them”

Ross Pick up another 9 Wins over the weekend

On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th Ross visited local club Monmouth for their annual Regatta. It was the turn of the veteran crews to pick up Pots this time, with Strong performances from the Vet C crews of Phil Davis, Jonathon Preece, Ian Howell, and Dave Morris Coxed by Fraser Blackwood who beat Bristol Ariel in their final. Then the Vet D crew of Jeremy Picton Turberville, Graham Watling, Dave Sykes, and Paul Nichols won, beating their rivals from Belfast. It was then the turn of the ladies vet C eight, of Kirsty Gwynne, Ruth Davis, Leigh Howell, Sheron Dean Lucas, Annie Williams, Chris Hughes, Cathy Fletcher, and Nikki Wild Coxed by Dan Ruck who convincingly beat their opposition from Llandaff. On Sunday Chris Jones won the j16 single sculls event and Kelly & Rosie back in action won again in the Women’s J15 double sculls event.

On Bank Holiday Monday the club attended Hereford Regatta and some strong performance resulted in another four wins. Lucy Jones in the women’s J14 sculls rowed beautifully to win her event. Ed Surman boys J14 single sculls picked up his first win of the season. Kelly and Rosie won again. The day was capped however by the ladies senior coxed four of Jasmin Brandram Jones, Hannah Jones, Emily Preece, Geenna Watling, coxed by Fraser Blackwood, winning their final over their opposition from Belfast.

Club captain Ian Howell commented, “This was an incredible weekend by the Ross club, even the weather could not get in the way of the progress the club is making. The club continues to thrive and is looking forward to achieving even more as the season progresses”.

Ross Double Wins At Bristol Avon Regatta

Louise and Katie Hudd who race for Ross Junior Rowing Academy won a hotly fought WJ15 x2 race at Saltford near Bristol on Saturday 17th May. Katie said, “This was my 14th Birthday and I wanted to do something to remember it by”. Winning this race with my sister has really made my day. The Bristol Avon Regatta, who root's go back to 1850 was not part of Ross R.C schedule of race events, but as we live in South Gloucestershire and only a few miles from the event we asked Club Captain Ian Howell if we could represent the club at our local event.

Louise said “this was the first time we have raced for Ross without the whole squad being there, and it did feel strange, even a little intimidating with a large support for the opposition.” Robin Fletcher (Junior Captain) had sent us a very inspiring email which we thought about as we rowed up to the start, this really helped us a lot. We cannot thank Ross Rowing Club enough for the support that it has shown to us since we joined. We would recommend anyone who has never rowed to give it a try, and there is no better club to row at than Ross RC.

The Club’s next squad events are this weekend at Monmouth Regattas on the 24th and 25th and Hereford Regatta on Bank Holiday Monday. Across this weekend the Ross Club is competing in over 40 different events by far a record for the club and is illustrative of the depth and quality of rowing taking place.

Ross Juniors Strike Gold and Silver

Ross Junior Academy squad members Amy Surman and Ed Surman competed in the National Junior Indoor rowing championships in London last Friday and came away with Gold and Silver medals. Amy Competing in the Girls year 7 won her event by rowing 516 meters in the 2 minute row. Ed rowing against some familiar opposition was narrowly pipped to a silver medal by competitors from Plymouth and Maidenhead who tied for the Gold Medal. This a wonderful result for them both and a testament to their committed training and support for the Junior Academy structure. Junior Captain Robin Fletcher Commented “This is a brilliant result and starts the 2008 season off with a bang. Amy and Ed are excellent Squad members and I am sure both are going to have very strong seasons in 2008” The Club next week is sending its largest Junior entry to the interregional trails at Worcester with the hope that it will achieve its largest ever representation in the West Midlands Squad. The club is also competing next week in the Tideway Head of the River with two men’s eights and the Veteran Head with another men’s eight and a ladies eight. The coming season looks like it is going to be a very busy one for the local club.

Hereford Pudding Race
16th December 2007

The mens squad from Ross Rowing club attended the annual Pudding race hosted by Hereford rowing club. The time trial over 4500 meters attracted many Hereford crews putting up stiff opposition for the two mens eights entered by Ross.

The first eight comprising all the bulging young talent that is steadily developing, coxed by Jane Delicata, had a excellent row coming in very closely behind the equivalent Hereford boat. The Ross vets 8 also had a good row being beaten by the first eight by only 65 seconds.

Ross Captain commented "We are delighted with the performances of the two eights and with additional personnel not available this weekend we have genuine competition for places in both boats"   The club now goes back to its winter training programme in preparation for the London Head.

Junior Academy dominates Welsh Indoor Rowing Championships

The Ross Junior Academy won a total of 11 medals at the Welsh Indoor rowing championships. These included 3 Gold medals for Steve Tuck - J15, Kelly Morris WJ14, and Ellie Grindle WJ12. Silvers were won by Amy Surman Wj12, Rosie Brandram Jones Wj13, Jessica Preece Wj16, Ellie Blackwood Wj14, Megan Godden Wj15, Bronze Medals Louise Hudd WJ15, Jasmin Brandram Jones Wj16 Katie Hudd   Wj14 and Ed Surman J14.

This medal haul included personal best for most of the squad and illustrates the depth   and quality of the Ross Junior Squads. Ergo Coach and men's Vice captain Graham Watling commented "It was just fantastic the enthusiasm and commitment of the junior squads is incredible I am very proud to be able to support them" - Junior Captain Robin Fletcher added, "To have Graham Watling's encouragement and support for this event makes all the difference and we are very fortunate to have such great coaching for the Junior Squad. The Junior Academy is taking a record 32 of its Junior squad to the British Indoor Rowing championships in November which attracts competitors from all over the world.

Hereford Cathedral girls win at Marlow

Emily Preece and Sarah Woolf both also members of the Ross Junior Academy won Junior and Ladies double sculls at Marlow Head over the 2500 meter course. Coached by Jane Delicata at Hereford Cathedral (Jane is also the Men's coach at Ross) the duo posted the fastest ladies double of the day winning by just 9 seconds.

Ross End 2007 Regatta Season In Style

Ross Rowing Club went to Worcester Sprint regatta for the last regatta of the summer season. It was a busy but brilliant day enjoyed by all, although many enjoyed a very early start(!), but some fantastic racing over the 450 metre course, resulting in five junior wins and two senior wins.

Despite overcoming hurdles such as a disqualification, a capsize, and a late trailer, highlights of the day were from the seven winners; the Women's Vet c eight, Michelle Hughes, Robyn Perkins, Kirsty Gwynne, Sheron Dean Lucas, Gina Butler, Chris Hughes, Karen Blackwood, Ruth Davies and Chris Crowhurst the Men's Senior 2 coxed fours Adam( See article below), WJ14 single sculler Kelly Morris, WJ15 single sculler Rosie Lindley, WJ11 single sculler Georgie Jones, the WJ15 double scull of Louise and Katy Hudd, and the WJ13 double scull of Amy Surman and Ellie Grindle. However there was fantastic effort put in by each and every person, on and off the water, along with brilliant organisation and support for the competitors.

The club is now starting to take up winter training, including competing at 'Heads', which are time-trials held over much longer distances, and a number of Ergo competitions.

Five lads continue their progress

After achieving the an amazing triumph at Gloucester Regatta the five "lads" have gone on to win again at Worcester regatta against the home crew.

In just three months five guys from Ross Rowing Club went from the lowest level in rowing - novice - through to just 2 levels below the highest rank you can achieve.   This was in spite of the frustration of 5 regattas being cancelled due to bad weather:-   Graham Watling (the Steve Redgrave of Ross Rowing club being on the wrong side of 40!), Anthony Dixon-Gough who, on joining Ross Rowing Club early in the year "just wanted to win his novices", brothers Adam and Roland Robinson both of whom only started to row last year and did not step into a sweep oar boat until February of this year and, last but not least, cox Fraser Blackwood who, until joining the crew in June of this year, mainly coxed Junior quads but has increased his knowledge and skill at steering the boat and driving his crews forward in an exceptionally short space of time.   This crew is the epitome of the saying "you get out what you put in" - they have trained long hours, through pain, with guts and determination.   The hanger-on in the picture is someone who chucked a few suggestions at them along their way to this phenomenal achievement.

Club captain Ian Howell told the gazette "It has been a truly amazing season in every aspect. The club is competing with such strength and at the highest of levels. I am very proud of all our winners. We have amassed a club record 76 wins over the season, which is incredible considering 5 major regattas the club would have attended were cancelled. The club won its first inter regional medal earlier in the year and many of the men's vet squad are currently competing at the world masters regatta in Zagreb. The club continues to improve in its organisation and quality and results are being seen on and off the water"

North of England Championships Hollingworth Lake

Ross Rowing Club recently took their junior squad along with a few seniors to Hollingworth Lake, for the North of England Rowing Championships. They had to put up with rough conditions and a strong wind but did extremely well, bringing home five club wins.

Winners of the day were the WJ14 quad of Morgan Baynham-Williams, Katy Hudd, Eleanor Blackwood, Lucy Jones and cox Fraser Blackwood, the WJ13 double of Amy Surman and Rosie Brandram-Jones, J14 single sculler Ed Surman, the WJ14 double of Kelly Morris and Rosie Lindley, and the WS4 double of Jasmin Brandram-Jones and Hannah Lewis. These wins were backed up by some fantastic racing from other crews, who didn't quite get the wins against the tough competition, but still showed brilliant determination through the rough conditions of the water.

At the end of the day the club was given a tremendous surprise by finding out that they had come second in the victor ludurom, a competition which collects points for where they place in each race. The club with the most points wins. Coming second behind some of the top clubs in the country was a major achievement for the club which was celebrated by all at the camp site that evening. Club Captain ian Howell told the gazette " We continue to be extremely proud of the Junior Academy who never fail to rise the occasion. Next week the club is taking a record number of entries to the final regatta of the season at Worcester"

24th September 2006 - Monmouth Head

Ross Juniors show off their medals

Ross Juniors achieve a Clean Sweep

The winter training season of head racing (Time trialing) commenced last weekend at Monmouth. Ross had 15 entries and took home 6 victories. The Junior squad achieved yet another new height with each entered crew all winning their event! This is unprecedented ,especially when you considered the Ross Juniors were up against all the local rowing schools, such as haberdashers and Kings Worcester. The successful crews were , Wj15 4x+ of 5 quad of Hannah Jones, Hannah Lewis, Jasmin-Brandram Jones and Georgina Watling with Frazer Blackwood Coxing; Wj16 4x+, Sarah Woolf, Fiona Rogoff, Jessica Preece and Emily Preece , Frazer Blackwood coxing, Wj162x Hannah Lewis, Jasmin-Brandram Jones; Open J152x . Dan Hunt and Dan Moran, Open j16 1x Borris Darcy.

The Junior wins were added to by the veteran crew of Phil Palmer, Clive Snell, Brian Fountain, Howard Copping with Sheron Dean Lucas coxing. The men's squad lost out in the Snr 3 eights by half a second and men's Snr 4 sculler Joe Bunting was pipped by just 3 seconds over the 2250 meter course.

This is an excellent start to the time trial season and indicated the quality of oarsmanship and enthusiasm there is at the Ross Club. The club will be celebrating the culmination of a successful season at the Regatta Ball on the 21st October held at the Chase hotel.

Pictured are the successful Ross Junior Academy squad members.

17th September 2006 - Boston Marathon 31 miles
Before the blood sweat and tears!
Marathon effort by Ross Womens Crew

The exhilarating feeling of achievement accompanied the sore backs and blistered hands, for the Ladies Senior 1 Coxed Four from Ross Rowing Club who successfully completed the Boston Rowing Marathon (Lincolnshire not USA!) on Sunday.

Kirsty Gwynne, Michelle Hughes, Robyn Perkins and Cathy Fletcher, coxed by Dan Ruck rowed 31 long miles (51 km) to be only the second female crew in the clubs history to attempt this event.

The Boston Rowing Marathon is an annual head of the river race over a 31-mile course on the River Witham between Lincoln and Boston. The race was first rowed in 1946 and this year attracted in excess of 200 crews across the United Kingdom and Europe.

"I think it was down the pub that someone joked about doing the Boston Marathon, "said Kirsty, who is stroke within the crew. "And in a moment of madness we all agreed!"

"The girls have had a very good racing season this summer, winning their events at Evesham, Shrewsbury, Stourport, Oxford, Llandaff and Ross regattas," said Robin Fletcher Ladies Captain. "However, they really are a sprint crew, so I was a little bemused but proud when I heard they were going to tackle this somewhat longer course. They are all very physically fit and mentally strong, so knew they would complete it no matter what"

Kirsty added, "We started off really well and settled into a comfortable rhythm with the boat moving positively through the water. You hear runners talking about hitting the 'wall' in running marathons, well we hit the rowing 'wall' after about 3 ½ hours of continuous rowing - our lower backs started to ache, our behinds had gone almost numb and any blisters we had developed along the way started to burst. But we knew we had to block out the pain and the boredom and just carry on. We were also spurred on by the fact that we were raising money for The Royal National College for the Blind, Hereford"

"Everyone remembers Steve Redgrave famously saying after the Olympics in Sydney that he never wanted to see a boat again, well that is exactly how we all felt when we crossed the finish line. We all know that Steve went on to compete in another Olympics and no doubt it won't be too long before we are back in training, just as soon as the blisters heal!"

The crew completed the course in a time of 4 hours and 35 minutes. Dan Ruck who coxed the crew said, "The river was very weedy and this kept getting stuck round our rudder and fin. When this happened I couldn't steer the boat and it felt like we were rowing with the brakes on. So we had to stop the boat at least 10 times for Kirsty at stroke to get out from her seat make her way very carefully to the end of the boat and put her hands under the water to release the weed. Boston marathon battle scars!

We reckon we lost about 10-15 minutes as a result of having to do this. Although we were slightly disappointed with our time we are delighted that we attempted and completed the Boston Marathon which is the longest rowing event in the country"

10th September 2006 - Juniors Impress at Worcester Regatta
On Saturday Ross took its largest ever Junior Squad to Worcester Sprint regatta. 25 Juniors took part in some excellent racing. The Ross Club came second in the victor Ludorum competition drawing with the likes of Worcester. The Winners on the day were Olivia Baynham Williams who won open j10 sculls, Rosie Brandram Jones who won open j12 Sculls, Eleanor Blackwood who won Women's J13 sculls, Rosie Lindley and Kelly Morris who won Women's j13 double sculls and Women's
J14 double sculls. These wins were supported by some exceptionally competitive racing from the rest of the squad.

Fiona Rogoff rowed brilliantly only to be beaten in the final of women's novice sculls. Dan Hunt and Dan Moran lost by just 1ft in the open j15 double sculls. The Women's J15 quad of Georgina Watling, Hannah Lewis, Hannah Jones and Jasmin Brandram Jones lost by 2ft and worked through to their respective semi finals with new partners including Jessica Preece and Emily Preece. Dan Ruck rowed particularly strongly in the boys j15 event. Chris Jones won through to his semi final in men's novice sculls. Scot Morris was Ross's youngest ever competitor at 8 years old and rowed brilliantly in his final of j10 sculls. Georgie Jones again rowed superbly in the j12 semi final.

The most attractive race of the day was the final of women's j13 single sculls, which had 3 Ross rowers, Lucy Jones, Eleanor Blackwood, Morgan Baynham William competing fiercely for the honours. This event attracted huge attention with novice to world champion rowers all stopping to admire the quality and precision of the Ross Juniors.

The success of the Junior Academy is quite unprecedented and it is attracting admiration from many other rowing clubs that are potentially much bigger than Ross. The Academy has now many offers from other clubs wishing to do combined training sessions and share in the best practice which is being delivered at the Ross Club.

Ian Howell and Robin Fletcher in the Double Sculls

On the senior side the men's squad competed in 6 finals and did not convert one into a win. The Men's Snr 3 crew of Borris Darcy, Graham Watling, Jeremy Kelk, Howard Colley coxed by Sheron Dean Lucas came closest . They were unlucky to dead heat in their final only to loose the rerow. Jeremy Kelk rowed fantastically well in the final of Snr 4 single sculls only to be beaten on the line.

Yet again the Ross club showed its strength in depth over the event. It is now back to winter training in preparation to achieve new heights next year.

Crabbing demonstration from Ross Scullers!
3rd / 4th June 2006 - Totnes and Mumbles - Ross take to the coast
Over the weekend the Ross club had representation at the Dart Totnes regatta and at Mumbles regatta. Both are tidal regattas and have their own unique attributes in organisation and location.

The bulk of the entries for Totnes were made up from the Junior Academy which had set up camp on Friday night for an early start of the multi lane racing on Saturday. The Mumbles party were made up of Father and Son combination Mike Jones and Chris Jones rowing as a pair.

The highlight of the events was the win for Rosie Lindley who had convincing wins over much older competitors. Kelly Morris only just missed this final by losing in her heat by half a length. The Junior squad won through to two other finals, Jasmin Brandham Jones and Jessica Preece in the J14 double Sculls and the J14 quad stroked by Georgina Watling ,with Jasmin Brandham Jones and Jessica Preece and Emily Preece rowing coxed by Frazer Blackwood won through to their final and cam second in their final holding off the Bideford crew by a canvas. The most improved crews in the squad were Eleanor Blackwood and Lucy Jones competing in the J13 Double Sculls. They has a tremendous race over what was by far the longest distance they have ever competed in. In addition Dan Ruck and George Wood competed for the first time in single sculls. Both had excellent rows only to come second and third to a more experienced Bideford sculler. They both commented on what a great experience the event had been for them both. Hannah Jones and Emily Preece rowing against much older competition battled well over the 1000 meter course only to be beaten in the last 100 meters. Hannah also competed in the J15 sculls final.

In the men's squad the veteran quad of Ian Howell, Bryn Hughes Paul Butler and Robin Fletcher were soundly beaten by a Totnes crew featuring several Vet World champions and then they teamed up with Graham Watling, Paul Nichols, Rob Hunter and Dave Morris to make an eight. Coxed by Sheron Dean Lucas this valiant eight put up a good performance only to be vanquished in the afternoon sun and falling tide by superior opposition.

In Mumbles Chris Jones won his first coxing pot at Mumbles Regatta. He was in the right place at the right time to cox Monmouth 'A ' in the Open committee Coastal IVs. In his final Monmouth beat Llandaff B & D crews by 2 lengths in a 3 lane final. Mike and Chris were beaten by a length in their coastal double sculls.

The key goal for the Totnes trip was to have a club away weekend and to enjoy the camaraderie that comes from all pitching in together. This was achieved in spades. The Saturday BBQ night was followed by the juniors versus the adults football match. We are still disputing some of the ref's decisions however the juniors are convinced they thrashed the adults! Sven has not called yet?

Captain Ian Howell commented that "everybody had a great time, enjoying good company and an amazing location combined with some highly competitive rowing. We are also delighted for Rosie to be competing to such a high standard and for Chris Jones in picking up his first coxing pot." Robin Fletcher (Ladies Captain) was particularly pleased by "how well the junior squad coped over the longer distance with some of the less experienced members really showing their will to win"

Over the weekend the Ross club had 21 competitors taking part in two regattas in 15 separate events. The Club next week changes tack and will be competing at the National Water Sports Centre in the National Veteran Championships and Loughborough Regatta. Of particular interest will be the senior 2 crew who are preparing for Henley and the Vet Novice 8 competing for their 1st time in a multi-lane event

29th / 30th April 2006 - Evesham Head - Ross strike gold
On Saturday the Ross Junior squad competed at the Evesham Junior Head of the River. This time trial event attracted crews from as far a field as Devon and London and represented the new squads biggest challenge yet.

The entire squad showed fantastic attitude in this tough style of rowing which is a test of fitness, technique and sheer will.

The Women's J12 double scull of Rosie Lindley and Kelly Morris won gold in their event, breaking the course record, and beat all the competing boys' crews' as-well! This result was supported by a bronze medal being won in the same event by Eleanor Blackwood and Morgan Williams.

The four girls then went on to win a silver medal by combining in a quad in the J12 event. Again the crew out paced two other boys crews and were very ably coxed by Kaylee Dimond.

The WJ14 quad crew of Emily & Jessica Preece, Hannah Jones, Kaylee Dimond and brilliantly coxed by Dan Ruck won bronze in their event. This crew showed great determination over the long course to beat 3 other crews in this very competitive event.

Other notable performances were Dan Ruck and Fraser Blackwood in the J15 sculls and Kaylee Dimond, Hannah Jones in the WJ14 double sculls. J14 single sculler Chris Jones rowed well in the largest event of the day gaining a respectable 5th place out of 9 competitors.

The junior squad at Ross grows from strength to strength and is looking forward to entering the winter training period to improve still further the quality of technique and get lots of training miles under their belt.

29th / 30th April 2006 - Evesham Regatta - Victory for the Squad
Ross had a good turnout for Evesham Regatta
The juniors, men's and ladies quads visited Evesham Regatta over the weekend. In addition to this Ross had representation at Wallingford Regatta on Dorney Lake home of the world championships this year. This first weekend of the regatta season saw over 50 club members competing in these two events.

Juniors

The racing started at 8.30 am at Evesham with Juniors Fiona Rogoff and Hannah Jones competing for the 1st time in J15 Double sculls. They narrowly missed out in their 1st competing event. After this they competed with Georgian Watling and Hannah Lewis in the J15 Quad Sculls with Fraser Blackwood coxing. Again they performed excellently against strong opposition only to be defeated. Hannah Lewis and Georgian teamed up with Emily and Jessica Preece and were narrowly defeated by a canvas in what was one of the closest races of the day.

The J12 squad of Lucy Jones, Eleanor Blackwood, Kaylee Diamond, Morgan Baynham Williams, Kelly Morris and Rosie Lindley competed in the J12 double sculls event. This keenly fought event was eventually won by Kelly and Rosie who beat a strong Evesham crew in the final.

The Junior men were represented by Borris Darcy and Joe Bunting racing in J16 and J18 Double sculls. The boys having vanquished the eventual winners of the event was unfortunate to suffer disqualification due to some errant steering. A tough lesson for the boys who have been training hard all winter. Their time will come. Competing for the 1st time together was Dan Ruck and George Wood in J13 Double Sculls. The boys had a particularly good start but were eventually out fought in the later section of the race by a more experienced crew from Staines.

Having over 17 juniors competing at one regatta is a record for the club and represented the largest squad attending the event from Ross. Robin Fletcher (Ladies Captain and Junior Coach) commented that the quality of oars-manship from all those attending was tremendous, in particular the J14/J15 women's quads rowed particularly well in their 1st event and Rosie and Kelly kept up their 100% record of winning"

Men's Squad

The men were represented in several events including Senior 3, Senior 4, Novice, and Veteran events. The highlight of the day was a victory for the Senior 4 eight, which was stroked by Phil Davies. The rest of the crew was made up of, Graham Watling, Howard Collie, Rob Hunter, Paul Nichols, Ian Howell, Richard Ceci and Jeremy Kelk. The crew was expertly coxed by Sheron Dean Lucas. Their victory over Pengwern (Shrewsbury) was a tremendous result of the great coaching being provided for the squad by Jane Delicata and George Smith. It is clear that the expertise, support and structure provided by these coaches have really paid off. The fact that the crew could be selected from a pool of rowers and deliver such an emphatic result is testimate to the long term development plan the club is adopting to building talent at the club. In the rest of the men's squad the senior 3 coxed four won through to their final only to be narrowly beaten by Staines. The Vet F coxed 4 and Vet D eight both lost in their respective finals and the Novice four lost in their semi final.

Ladies Squad

The Ladies were represented by a Senior 2 coxed four and a Senior 3 eight. The Ladies four made up of Kirsty Gwynne, Michelle Hughes Robin Perkins, Cathy Fletcher in their 1st competitive outing of the season, emphatically dismissed their opposition winning by a comfortable margin. The crew was coxed by Dan Ruck who steered a near perfect course in his 1st event at this level of competition. This crew are now focusing all their efforts on Ladies Henley In June. The Ladies senior 3 eight lost in the final of their event to Evehsam.

Malin Eriksson continued her good form in a single scull by winning the Wallingford Skiff Regatta Cup at the prestigious Wallingford Regatta. This is Ross' first win at Dorney Lake, the venue for the 2012 Olympics. In her final she beat off tough opposition including a Scottish international sculler.

Malin also competed in the Senior 2 event and made final, where she did not cope well with the conditions but was still within touching distance of a sculler
who made the Great Britain Final Trials.

Malin's next competition is in Gent Belgium, where she will make her debut on the international regatta circuit. Encouragingly she recorded the second fastest time of the day and should look forward with confidence towards this high level competition.

Club Captain Ian Howell commented that "this is an outstanding start to the regatta season and one the strongest ever according to club members. What is most satisfying is that the squad systems that take patience and a huge degree of work are really having a positive effect. By being able to coach in large groups it creates a performance climate that breeds support and flexibility within the club. This principle applies across the Juniors, Ladies and Men's training groups and is starting to become engrained in the Ross culture"

Next week Malin Ericson will achieve another first for the Ross Club. Malin is competing in the Gent international regatta in Belgium. This will pit Malin against some of the best women scullers in Europe. We wish her the best of luck.

26th March 2006 - London Head - Worlds largest rowing event
The Ross men had an excellent row on Saturday in the Head of the River. Rowing in the A crew was Phil Watkins, Howard Collie, Graham Watling, Richard Ceci, Paul Nichols, Jeremy Kelk, Joe Bunting Borris Darcy, and Cox Rhiannon Jones, enjoyed a tremendous row on the course between Chiswick and Putney Bridge. This relatively inexperienced crew cope brilliantly in this European event by posting a time of 21.17 which is 10 seconds faster than last years time set by a far more experienced Ross crew. Phil Davies set a high tempo and effective rhythm which allowed the crew to settle into an effective pace. Having overtaken several other competing crews the boat was set up for a 4 abreast grandstand finish at Putney Bridge with the crew finishing 351 out the 450 entries. Both Borris (14) and Joe (15) are products of the Junior Academy and coped very well in this senior crew. Also in this boat were three oarsmen (Howard, Graham and Jeremy) who only started rowing in the middle of last year and have become firm members of this performance squad.

The B Crew, of Phil Palmer, Rob Hunter, Tony Allen, Brian Fountain, Dave Morris, Mike Jones, Paul Butler, Ian Howell and Cox Sheron Dean Lucas also took to the water in what is the world's largest rowing event. This even more inexperienced crew had to cope with the loss due to injury of Tony Allen before the race and the last minute replacement by George Smith. Although the crew were disappointed for Tony who has been preparing for the event through the winter it was a stroke of luck that George was available. He is a highly experienced international rower and he supported the crew in their creditable performance, coming in only 1 minute thirty seconds behind the A crew finishing at 399. Again this crew had new squad members, including, Brian, Dave, Paul who had never attempted this level of competition before. The entire crew especially Sheron Dean Lucas coxing performed brilliantly and executed their race plan to perfection.

Captain Ian Howell commented "We are delighted with the performances of the two crews. The squad is currently in a rebuilding phase and we look forward to seeing this group develop over the coming regatta season. What's more the spirit and camaraderie demonstrated over the weekend was a joy to work with and demonstrates the amazing spirit that resides in the club at present"

11th March 2006 - London Head - Ross Ladies Compete at the Highest Level
Ready for the off
The weekend saw the Ross ladies squad competing in the women's head of the river. This event over the boat race course on the Thames attracts the best women rowers from all over Europe.

The Ross (Redgrave) crew of Cox; Tom Williams, Malin Ericson, Michelle Hughes Amelia Kinsella, Cathy Fletcher, Robyn Perkins, Kirsty Gwynne, Chris Hughes, Annie Williams Finished 100 over all out of the 350 crews. That means Ross is in the top 100 on women's rowing in Europe. It was to be stated that this crew could not achieve this goal without the support of the Pinsent Crew crew Cox - Rhiannon Jones, Nicky Wild ,Amy Perkins, Jane Davies, Kat Clarke, Becky (Junior only rowing 4 weeks!!!) Gina Butler, Chris Crowhurst, Sheron Dean Lucas, which ranked a very credible 252.

Ladies captain Robin Fletcher commented "This was great result, with both crews rowing superbly. This firmly establishes Ross as a Leading club in women's Rowing in the UK and bodes very well for the coming regatta reason. Also competing and winning this weekend at the Gloucester Head of the River was the Veteran F crew of Phil Palmer, Clive Snell, Mike Jones, and Howard Copping coxed by Chris Jones. The stalwart crew saw off their competition posting a new course record for their event.
Ross crews prepare to launch
Club President Clive Snell commented that this was an excellent result for the veteran performance crew and sets them up for some anticipated international competition in the summer. In addition Chris Jones rowing J14 sculls came a creditable 3rd out of 6 in his event and Mike Jones won his sculling event as well. Captain Ian Howell commented, this was a great weekend for the entire club. The ladies especially deserve high praise for their dedication and commitment over the winter. Next week we are sending 5 of our top Juniors to the inter regional trails which again is another first for the Club"
March 2006 - Worcester Head of the River
The Ross womens eight took part in the Worcester Head of the River this March
Ross Womens Eight on good form
February 2006 - Wallingford Head - Ross reach new heights
Sculler Malin Eriksson reached new heights of success for the Ross club this weekend by winning both her divisions at the Wallingford Head of the River. This event is attended by all the top rowers in the country as it is the first of the key winter season time trials.

Malin was competing against all the prospective GB squad all of whom she beat by at a clear margin. Malin in fact was only beaten by one other women's sculler on the day and she was a ex GB world championship contender.

It is clear that Malin is showing true high performance potential and her result is testament to her dedication, resilience, fitness combined with a strong will to win.

Also competing at this event was Robin Fletcher (Ladies Captain) and Tom Williams (Wallingford). They competed exceptionally well achieving a highly creditable 2nd place out of 9 in their Men's Snr 2 category.

Robin commented that "Malins' performance was a tremendous achievement and is a just reward for all the hard work she is putting in"

29th January 2006 - Stourport Head - Erikson does the double
Ross ladies sculler Malin Erikson in her Haigh Engineering sponsored boat continued her steady preseason progress by winning both her events at the Stouport Head of the River on Sunday. Malin posted the fasted ladies sculling time of the day, beating several higher status sculling in the process.

Ladies Squad

Ross had its largest entry for many years at this Head of the River, with all the different squads being represented. The ladies four of robin perkins, any perkins, chris Hughes, cathy fletcher - cox robin fletcher put in a steaming performance to win their event narrowly by just 2 seconds over the 4.5 Km course. This is a tremendous result, illustrating, the power, concentration and focus required to win over such a distance. The ladies eight in the Walford Timber sponsored Ian Wild, comprised of Kirsty Gwynne , Michelle Hughes, Nicky Wild, Annie Williams, Gill (in her first ever event) Sheron Dean Lucas, Cat Randle, Jane Davies, coxed by Rhiannon Jones, finished second in their event. Again this was a great performance for the squad especially the newer members.

Mens Squad

The men's squad put out two eights with both having very solid rows. The quality of oarsman ship in both crews was a credit to the work completed so far in the winter training and fastest crew was 26th out of the 178 entries on the day. This senior 3 crew came third in its event. Graham Watling and Paul Nichols navigating themselves down the course in a coxless pair came second in their event. The men's Senior 4 coxed four of Mike Jones, Brain Fountain, Dave Morris and Jeremy Kelk , coxed by Sheron Dean Lucas performed heroically in their event.

Junior Squad

The juniors were represented by Chris Jones in the jj14 sculls and a J15 quad of Fiona Rogoff, Hannah Jones, Hannah Lewis, and Georgian Watling coxed by Dan Ruck. The experienced gained in this event will put them in excellent position to compete during the regatta season. Club Captain Ian Howell commented "We are very proud of how all the Juniors coped with the conditions and challenged themselves over such long distance event."

Overall all this was an excellent day with 10 entries all competing well with most crew members completing over 18KM over the day.

In the senior squad the honours were taken by Howard Collie and Jeremy Kelk who won their Nov Double sculls event and this was supported by Ian Howell and Torsten Pope who also won in their Vet B Double sculls.

This weekend marks the end of a remarkable Regatta season. The Ross club has gone from strength to strength with over 30 wins coming from all sections. Close racing in the Ladies Coxed Fours

The ladies senior 4 coxed iv worked their way through 2 rounds only to be beaten in their semi final. This crew of Rhiannon Jones, Jane Davis, Annie Williams and Sheron Dean Lucas performed heroically, showing real potential for the coming regattas.

The ladies senior 2 coxed iv, made up of Ruth Davies, Kirsty Gwynne, Michelle Hughes and Cat Randall rowed well in their rounds only to loose out in either the semi finals or finals.

The men's crews failed to convert the finals they achieved into pots. The Club had Senior 2 Coxed IV's, crews on both days, both loosing in their respective finals, and having made up composite 8 crews with Tyne Rowing Club again were narrowly beaten in an exciting final. Other very notable performances were the men's Novice 4 - Paul Butler, Jeremy Kelk, Howard Collie, Paul Symonds who competed very well over the long course on Saturday and the revised crew of Mike Jones, Phil Palmer Paul Butler and Jeremy Kelk who won their first round. Senior 3 Double scullers Ian Howell and Tim Bunting lost in their semi final, as did Paul Nichols and Richard Ceci in the early round of the men's novice IV. J15 scullers Borris Darcy and Joe Bunting sculled well on both days making the final on Saturday and a semi on Sunday.

The entire weekend was an excellent club outing with most staying overnight in the campsite with a large BBQ and alternative sporting activities taking place. Club Chairman Bryn Hughes commented 'it was great to see such a huge entry with over 35 different members including Juniors taking part"

I hope those are high energy burgers!
