A huge round of applause for Morgan Baynham-Williams who had an eventful last weekend.
Last Thursday Morgan was in the UK whilst the senior GB rowing team were in Poznan, Poland, preparing for the start of the European Championships. Imagine Morgan’s surprise when she received a call saying the cox of the women’s eight, Zoe de Toledo, was poorly and could Morgan please get herself over to Poznan asap. Her last minute dash was made even more difficult by a cancelled plane and Morgan finally arrived in Poznan at 3am on Friday morning. Nevertheless, she was up early to cox the women’s eight in their warm up training session and then coxed them through their heat where they finished second to the Russian’s, making it through to the repechage.
On Saturday in the repechage Morgan was again in the cox seat and the GB women led from start to finish, despite strong pressure from Netherlands and Germany, to qualify for the final on the Sunday. Zoe de Toledo had recovered for her illness in time to cox the final where unfortunately the GB crew caught a crab in the closing stages and finished 5th overall.
Meanwhile Morgan had hot-footed it back to the UK where on Sunday she coxed the Leander Men’s Eight to victory in the Metropolitan Regatta at Dorney Lake. Just an average weekend in the life of a GB cox!
