Ross Crews shine at Regional

The Junior Academy from Ross Rowing Club had 3 representative crews in the West Midlands squad at the Junior Interregional Championships. This regional team event brings together the best crews from each region to race over 1500m at the national Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.
Ross’s youngest competitor was Heidi Brodholt who rowing above her age group with her doubles partner Lara Banks Martin in women’s J14 double sculls rowed a mature and technically excellent first round. They missed out on a place in the A final by the narrowest of margins, just 3 hundreds of  second! They performed brilliantly in their B final winning comfortably in a time which wold have earned them a 5th place in the A final. They are certainly ones to watch for the future.

Heidi and Lara
Harley Kernot rowing in the WJ15 singles category had a very tough first round and placed 8th over all in the time trials. In her B final Harley delivered an excellent paddle and secured some much needed points for the West Midlands Squad.
Junior Captain, Paul Brodholt said, “All single scullers deserve gold medals for courage and grit.”

The Editor says…..The silverware may have gone elsewhere but a big shout out for Harley; on your own in a single, competing on this intimidating long course.  Respect, girl!  Ross Rowing Club is Proud of you….

The Ross WJ16 eight coxed by Adrienne Howell were determined to deliver an exceptional performance in the preliminary round in order to secure a place in the A final and the best possible lane position. They did not disappoint.  Stroke Gabby Howell set the pace which the crew had rehearsed time and again. Backed up by Noe Banks Martin, Elysia Cotton and Zoe Westley the “engine room” effortlessly found the rhythm and by 500ms the Ross crew had created a clear water advantage over the field including LEH school. Lilly Croft, Emily Morris, Frankie Crilly and Hattie Aubrey providing exactly the level of support required to create a super fast eight.

After a long rest the crew took to the water again for the A final where they were up against an old rival from Henley Rowing Club (Thames Up River, plus a strong crew from Lea rowing Club ( Eastern). At the 500 mark Ross and Henley were leading by a length over the rest of the field. Through the middle 500, the Henley crew, crept slowly away with the Ross crew keeping hold of 2nd place. With  250 meters to go Ross had only a 2 second margin over the Lea crew.  It was then the girls pulled away from the on coming Eastern boat enough to secure a tight and incredibly satisfying Silver Medal.
Crew coach, Ian Howell, Commented, “These girls showed unbelievable commitment in the last throws of this race and deserve this silver medal” .

Welcome back Howard Colley

Great to see Howard Colley back on the water at Ross again. Even better, we have other young chaps for him to row with now too.

A Saturday morning row with Richard Dennison, Tom Goulding , Howard Colley and Jim Pettipher. This was one of Mia’s first goes at coxing; she did really well, considering the bunch of blokes she had in the boat….

Wot you looking at?

Great to See Georgi Edwards and Camera on Saturday

Georgi Edwards, Senior Development squad member, popped down with her camera on Saturday and took some great photographs from the coaching boat and bank. Lovely to see you, Georgi and thanks for the

Pay Up to Row

A heads up that by now the club should have received the majority of renewed/new memberships – but we are well short of that.

Jack Wesley must have forms and payment in by the first week of May – or there’s no rowing.
If people wish to make use of the Standing Order facility – after the end of the first week in May you won’t be able to if you don’t act now.

Good luck to everyone competing at Evesham Regatta this Weekend

Newsletter Editor on Riverbank

It’s nearly May and we had snow this week!
It’s the first local regatta at Evesham this weekend for Seniors and Juniors. Hopefully the weather behaves itself. Equally, we need the weather to stay fine for the Cider and Beer Festival, a Charity event organised by Rotary and the Lions Club.

Bring your families down for a fun time. The club has the food concession and a Team on the barbecue. Remember, it is an opportunity to generate club funds to benefit us all.

I was sent some great stories again this week. Have a great weekend.

The Editor on the Riverbank can only report what you tell her; something to say? Got any good pictures? Junior parents got something to share?
If you want to communicate with the Club via the newsletter, let me,  Annie Williams know, by email or in person.
