CLUB NEWS

We are now into April and spring has well and truly sprung. As we head into Regatta season, we can reflect on some challenging high river levels throughout the heads season which put paid to some racing. However, we did have entries at Gloucester, Avon and Cardiff heads and a mixed 8 crew also raced on the Tideway at the Vesta masters head last weekend.

We recently held a Senior rowers meeting to discuss the coming spring and summer season. In terms of racing, we already have the potential for 9 or 10 crew entries for the National Championships in Nottingham this year. For the local regatta circuit, we are looking to build crews primarily around similar/close age categories and low CRI crews. We are also hoping for entries to Henley Masters and the World Champs in Bled. Please approach your captains to express your interest in racing at any level this year. To support members in whatever their ambition may be, we are also looking at our coaching offer over the coming weeks.

Now the river is behaving a little better, the clocks have changed and the days are getting warmer, we encourage all senior rowing members to join in the senior sessions – Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Saturday and Sunday mornings, morning rowing every weekday at 10am and MARS on Tuesday afternoons and Sundays at 10am.

Our first cohort of Learn to Row starts with a meet and greet on 11th April. With sessions on Saturdays and Sundays at 10am, we encourage all senior members to help out with sitting in, coxing or coaching.

Avon Spring Head  – Op Mas GH 1x Mike Jones and Op MasFG 4+ Graham Watling, Dave Sykes, Dave Russell, Clive Walton and cox Sheron Dean-Lucas. Congratulations to Sheron and the crew for their decisive win! Officially kicking off the 2026 RRC medal tally! Picture below of the winning crew.

Head of the Taff – Op Mas E 1x Mike Jones. Unfortunately the Masters E oppo was too strong but he had a good race, not withstanding the strong headwind on the latter part of the course.

Gloucester Spring Head – MxMasCD 4x Buffy, Greg Powell, Georgie Lockham and Mike Jones. The crew survived a wild, windy and wavy row!

Vesta Head of the River – MxMasABC 8+ Alice Simon, Ellen Phelps, George Smith, Steve Randall, Gareth Robbins, Anthony Dixon-Gough, Alison Barker, Holly Campbell and cox Rachel Wales. Report below.

Mike Jones in a bit to beat his impressive number of entries from last year, also entered 3 other heads in January and February but sadly they were cancelled due to river conditions. 

Registration is officially open for the LEARN 2 ROW summer courses.

Meet and Greet: 11th April

Course 1: 18th April – 23rd May

Course 2: 13th June – 5th July

Sessions will be Saturday and Sunday 10am – 12pm. If you know anyone who would be interested in joining on the river they should email learn2row@rossrowingclub.co.uk to secure a spot.

Fliss Cox stroked the Reading University Intermediate 4x to victory some 40 seconds faster than the second place crew. What a fantastic achievement! Well done Fliss. Picture of Fliss’ crew above.

Annabel Pope rowed in the 7 seat in the University of York’s 3rd 8+. Annabel said that their row was the best they have had and they finished only 30 seconds behind York’s B crew. Picture of Annabel’s crew below.

Jessie Punn coxed Manchester University’s Men’s 8+ and hey finished 21st.
