Learn to Row at Ross Rowing Club

Our Learn to Row courses run throughout spring and summer, providing a fantastic introduction to the sport. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to return to rowing after a break, this course is designed to help you build confidence and develop your technique in a supportive and friendly environment.

Courses take place every Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00 over a six-week period, subject to numbers and coach availability. The cost for the full course is £99 per person.

Our volunteer coaching team, supported by club members, is dedicated to making your rowing experience both instructive and enjoyable. You will begin in stable recreational boats, specifically designed to help you learn the correct technique before progressing to finer racing shells.

Throughout the course, you will develop a working knowledge of rowing, including both on-water and off-water skills. You will also learn safe rowing procedures, boat and equipment handling, and gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of rowing and sculling. By the end of the programme, you will have the ability to row with others or on your own.

The course also offers a fantastic introduction to Ross Rowing Club’s community. As a temporary member, you will have the chance to meet other rowers and, if you wish, progress to one of our rowing squads to continue developing your skills. For those keen to get more involved, there are also opportunities to learn how to cox.

Beyond the physical and technical aspects, our Learn to Row course is about having fun and embracing new challenges. We even include a capsize drill, so you’ll know exactly what to do if you end up in the water!

Our Women’s Novice Coxed Quad won events just one year after completing their Learn to Row course—proof that this programme can take you further than you ever imagined!

We welcome everyone over 18, as well as ages 12–17 through our Junior Section. You must be able to go up and down steps while carrying a boat, swim 50m in light clothing, and tread water. If you have any medical conditions, please consult your doctor before signing up.

If you’re looking for a new challenge, a great way to keep fit, and the opportunity to be part of a thriving club, why not give rowing a go?
