Spring is here and the lighter evenings and warmer weather means that things are getting busy on the river and regatta racing is well underway.
Weekend mornings are now very busy and the club is a buzz with activity. Early weekend rowing continues and Learn to Row is now also well underway with busy sessions on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10am. We have a great take up of new rowers and lots of support from existing members.
Evening rowing on Tuesdays and Thursdays are back with consistent numbers enjoying the river. We are also starting up the Friday evening rowing session (which can be followed up with social drinks and burger of course!). Morning rowing and MARS sessions also continue to have consistent numbers and we encourage members to join these sessions if and when they can.
Low Water rules
Having had some challenging high waters over the winter, we have now moved to the challenge of low water. We have communicated the low water rules to members via Spond (Post dated 1st May) and reiterate below.
Low water brings challenging conditions for us to get out and navigate the river. With that in mind, we must ensure we protect club boats from damage at all times.
1. Do not take 8s out when it is 2in below the bottom step.
2. You are advised to row between the Regatta start (marked with yellow buoy) and the Hope and Anchor.
3. Do not turn above the top wires.
If the river continues to fall, please assess the depth and walk boats out (and back in) to the deeper water. Please be aware of the narrowing at the beaches and the rocks on your bow side going up to the top wires.
If you are confident in your ability to avoid the rocks above the regatta start or the wall below the Hope and Anchor then carry on….BUT you will be asked to pay a contribution to damage caused. This includes coaching boats.
Please use your own discretion to look after our boats. Like with high water, if in doubt, don’t go out!!
Senior Racing report
The regatta season is now well under way and It’s really great to see Ross crews out there competing.
Birmingham: Mike Jones – won one and lost one in a round robin event. The sculler who beat Mike went on to a convincing overall victory in the event.
Evesham: We entered 7 crews for the 1000m course on Saturday. This hugely popular two day regatta attracts many crews from all over the country and is often oversubscribed. When this happens the number of events are restricted and unfortunately two of our crews were rejected for this reason. Undaunted, both crews will be racing at events very soon.
Other Evesham crews, Mike – OpMasH/I1x, George – OpMasD/E1x, and the low CRI W4x+ crew of Gill, Joanna, Fiona, Poppy and cox Rachel were unsuccessful this time but enjoyed some hard racing.
However, George S & Gareth OpMasC/D 2x and George G & Bron WMasD2x took convincing wins after two rounds.
