President’s Lunch

Or possibly Presidents’ Lunch given their multitude

JPT* would like to thank all our generous sponsors, guests, Ross Rowing Club members and friends for their company at this year’s Presidents Lunch. Your presence, the sunshine and lovely food provided by Woods of Whitchurch, made for a great event.

We were joined by Alan Meagan of British Rowing and his wife Cathy. Alan rowed with Torsten the day before, sporting Llangwyd Rowing Club colours.

Ian Hale, recognisable to many as the “voice of Ross Regatta”, delivered a speech during which Torsten Pope, RRC Facilities Director, was presented with the ‘Camilleri Turd’ in honour of his drain unblocking skills.

Given the absence of our normal regatta racing as the backdrop to the President’s Lunch, a special edition, commemorative Regatta Programme was published for the event. Sure to appear as an important collectable in future episodes of Antiques Roadshow.

We were joined by five former Presidents and a 6th, Nigel Shepherd, after lunch. From across the oceans, we were joined by possibly our furthest distant former rowing club member, Peter Clutterbuck who came all the way from Australia . Peter is now President of the Tamar Rowing Club in Tasmania. Welcome to you all and thank you for making such efforts to join us.

*JPT, Jeremy Picton-Turbervill. Other spellings accepted.

From JPT:
“A massive thanks from me to all RRC members who helped with setting up, in particular:
Torsten & Debby Pope
Bryn and Christine Hughes
Ian Hale
George Aubrey
Diane Lancaster
Sue Thompson
Sarah Tighe
Sheron & Neil Lucas
Nicky Wilde
David, Jan and Emily Rosser”

Set up gang – thank you all

Penarth Racing
Or… Welsh Wave Watch 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Smiles all round as Sarah and Dave, Pam and Tim, Buffy and Tim, Plum, Nicky, Dan, Chris, Beth, Ellen and Alice and any others that I’ve missed from RRC, competed and won at Penarth Regatta. A threatening sky and increasingly choppy sea off the Cardiff coast meant a curtailed programme, but not before some great performances were put in and a lot of fun was had by all.

From Buffy: “Penarth – windy and choppy splash and dash in the morning, happily married boat of Tim x2 +Mrs’ all came out smiling. Then wind picked up for the afternoon session, proper white horses against the tide so it was called off at lunchtime (boats up to gunwales by end of morning session with coxes frantically bailing) but a few of the ladies went swimming anyway – we had got quite soggy enough! (Plus Ellen and Alice but they swam to the pier so missed the photo opportunities)”

Thanks Mike for organising 🤗
An end of regatta season highlight as ever

‍♂️ Rowers Reciprocate
A warm welcome from rowers across the world

We were delighted to host a group of five athletes from Salford University Rowing Club where Beth Morris is Captain (and Coach). They were training at Ross ahead of competing at Gloucester Regatta last weekend.

Meanwhile, as Salford was welcomed at Ross, Ross was welcomed to Club Canottieri Lugano in Switzerland where Sally P rowed across an international border into Italy

GB MBW

Lago Varese

Lake Varese was hosting the GB Para squad training camp at which Morgan Baynham-Wiliams is coxing in advance of a second GB representation, this time at the Worlds. Watch this space for racing programme.

As Lake Varese is the next lake over from Lake Lugano, the Pettipher family linked up with Morgan for an RRC members and alumni caffè in terrazza

Lovely to see you @morganbw7

World Rowing Masters

While Morgan represents Ross as a full GB squad athlete at the World Championships, another Ross rower will also represents the club on the world stage…

From Pam Ball, Ladies Captain:

World Rowing Masters Regatta

“Our very own Sheron Dean-Lucas is en route to Libourne to take part in the World Rowing Masters Regatta commencing on Wednesday 7th September in France.

Sheron will be very busy rowing and coxing in a variety of boats including fours and eights for Monmouth, City of Bristol and Ardingly.

The venue Is one of the best on the planet, the Dagueys International Nautical Center. The lake is located in the middle of the world’s most prestigious vineyards, such as Pomerol or Saint-Emilion.

We are very proud Sheron. Good Luck, look forward to hearing how you get on, keep us posted.”

Planning Progress

 Brilliant news 🥳

“After fifteen months of detailed technical correspondence, we have satisfied the concerns of all authorities with an interest in this application. To actually be permitted to undertake construction work within the highly protected River Wye ‘site of special scientific interest’ AND ‘special area of conservation’ is quite an achievement for an amateur sports club.  I am most grateful to all members who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience in support of this application.

Whilst I have done a bit of admin and chasing people along, the heavy lifting on the technical maters has been done by Tim Ball.  Please be clear:  Without his input this would not have been achieved.”

Rob Sedman
Rob… from all of us … THANK YOU
