After the Flood

The story of Ross Rowing Club’s remarkable bounce back. Told in the words of British Rowing’s Alan Meegan, and featured on British Rowing’s website.

Articles like this are normally only accessible to those who can log in, but as this is an important story for Ross, beyond its rowers, I wanted to share it in its entirety.

RRC flood and rebuild. British Rowing Plus, author Alan Meegan

How Ross “built back better”

Some excerpts:
“The club’s officers, members, friends, supporters and others pulled together… “

“Even more impressively, they achieved this while fundraising and working through the Covid pandemic and its consequences on building contractors and the national shortage of materials.”

“Work on the rebuild restarted, but very slowly. While waiting for the builders, club members refurbished the boathouse front”

“This was delayed again, as river flooded for a fourth time…”

“The clubhouse has been made flood resilient as it has too many openings to be flood resistant.”

“We congratulate Ross RC on this remarkable recovery and on its innovative design to minimise future flood damage. We wish them well for the future!”

Training in full swing

On Saturday the river was too high and fast for boats so the Women’s crew took to the ergos.

Sunday saw a number of competitive crews training in big boats for Monmouth Head next weekend.
The Mixed crew out in Colossus took some training video, thanks to Jack for driving the launch and Tim for filming and coaching.
A range of experience, from beginners to national medal winners. Four men, five women including the cox, from a six foot ten monster to a five foot four tiddler.
We had a blast

Learning to Coach to Row

Buffy spent this weekend at Llandaff on her British Rowing Coaching course. Many of our club rowers volunteer to help people, adults and children, to learn to row. Having trained Level 2 rowing coaches is a great step up in expertise and we are grateful to club members willing to take on this training.

We look forward to being “Bossed by Buffy” in the coming months.

Risky Business
Buffy had to, in own words, “risk assess the scary water over the weir!”
Any of us who have rowed or coxed at Llandaff are familiar with that weir

Marsha O’Mahony

Rob Sedman visited the excellent Ross Christmas Fayre in town on Sunday and picked up a copy of this local history book. It includes some nice rowing pictures and stories.
The author,  Marsha O’Mahony, was signing copies on the Herefordshire Lore stall.

I am not certain, but I it may well be that Rossiter Books will have some copies. At the Fayre they were £13
ps. former RRC junior Joe can be found at Rossiter Books on certain days. Say hello to him!
